Sigiriya Rock Fortress

Built by an obsessed monarch in the 5th century, Sigiriya or Lion Rock is an astonishing feat of  engineering and construction. According to inscriptions found in the caves which honeycomb the base of the rock fortress, Sigiriya served as a place of religious retreat as far back as the third century BC.

Surrounded by the remains of an extensive network of gardens, reservoirs, and other structures, this rock fortress provides you with one of the most dramatic sites in Sri Lanka. The pleasure gardens include a series of symmetric pools, channels and fountains that still spurt water after 1,500 years. A popular tourist destination, Sigiriya is also renowned for its ancient paintings (frescos), which are reminiscent of the Ajanta Caves of India. It is one of the eight World Heritage Sites of Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka is an ornithologist's paradise with over 250 resident species, mostly found in the wet zone.
